epiphany

I had a moment of insight while talking to a dear friend of mine today.  He contacts me everyday in one form or another, just to say "hello". We never talk about deep, thought-provoking topics.....just the everyday things in our lives. He is always there to listen to anything I have to say; never judging or giving advice, or any opinion on what I say. He is always genuinely interested in my life; asking probing questions to find out more. He has never asked anything of me in return. He is just there!! in the present moment.
Suddenly, I realized that the consistent attention is one of the greatest gifts I could receive from anyone!! What has always seemed to be ordinary was actually love in it's purest form!!!
WOW!!

Where have you been looking?

Right now, I am reaching inward to the deep stillness, below all the chaos outside myself. It is my sanctuary when the world and people in it become confusing......I've been sensing my emotions are being manipulated.... detecting inconsistencies in words and actions......my inner still voice reminding me to pay attention!!

Hold on to what is good
Even if it is a handful of earth
Hold on to what you believe
Even if it is a tree which stands by itself
Hold on to what you must do
Even if it is a long way from here
Hold on to life
Even when it is easier letting go
Hold on to my hand
Even when I have gone away from you

By which 'sense' are you most affected?

The thing that comes to mind would be hearing. It's the first thing I notice when I wake up in the morning...the birds singing, the wind blowing, etc. I especially love listening to silence! But I prefer the times when all my senses are working together. Like when I'm walking in the woods, drinking in the beauty, smelling the earth, hearing the wind in the pines, feeling the textures of the forest floor, tasting the cool air.  oh yeah!!

Are you a morning person or a night person?

I tend to adapt to whatever is required of me at the time. Right now I work 2pm - 10pm so I am more of a night person at the moment. I enjoy slowly waking up, knowing I don't have to be anywhere right away. I have all morning to lounge around.  Before that, I spent two years working the overnight shift. What I liked about that was being able to watch the sunrise & sunset everyday!  When I worked the day shift I really enjoyed sitting quietly in the predawn hours, sipping my tea, listening to the world wake up. There is definitely something nice about every part of the day!!

Do you pay much attention to what others think of you?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for December 06, 2007:

Many years ago, when I was much younger, I was constantly worried about people's opinion of me. I would try to be what everybody wanted. After many years of stress & depression, I finally realized it was just too much work and it didn't really make much difference in my life if anyone liked me anyway. Now I am perfectly content with who I am, no matter what anyone else thinks.

What was the last thing you made from scratch?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for November 19, 2007:

I made three crazy quilts ( for my daughter, my sister & I).  They aren't just ordinary multi-colored polyester squares, either.  They were made from the clothing of my beloved grandmother who has passed away. When she died I couldn't bare to throw away her clothes. I kept imaging her standing in her kitchen wearing that flowered purple smock, baking cookies. Or sitting crocheting my yearly pair of slippers in her bright yellow blouse. So I decided to cut them up & make quilts, that way we could curl up in grandma's warm embrace & remember all the wonderful times we had with her.
